Woman in the Machine

In the summer of 2021, the VISUAL art gallery and the Carlow Arts Festival collaborated to create Woman in the Machine. I was one of the selectors of the art work for the exhibition at VISUAL. I also DJed at the gallery.

Sisters With Transisters

I was invited to moderate a panel discussion after a screening of Sisters With Transisters on International Women’s Day 2021. You can the discussion HERE.

The documentary film by Lisa Rovner is about pioneering women in electronic music, featuring Daphne Oram, Pauline Oliveros and many more.

The panel comprised Irish composers and producers: Linda Buckley, Michelle Doyle (Rising Damp), Maimouna Salif (Celaviedmai) and Reneé Griffin (Syn).

Among other things, we discussed representation in the film. This Twitter thread about producer Sylvia Moy, is a follow up to that.

Hosted by Aemi, Dublin Feminist Film Festival and the Irish Film Institute.

Open Ear

A small, independent festival on Sherkin Island in West Cork, Open Ear is lavish in its experimentation and unstinting in its rave. With a programme of predominantly Irish electronic music, it’s an exemplar in fostering community in the arts.

Emma Cawley produced this radio documentary about the 2019 festival and I was a contributer. Emma is also a DJ on ddr. and has produced some extraordinary interviews for the station, including this one with Linda Perhacs and this one with Tessa Pollitt of the Slits.

Bright Sparks

Architect and author Owen O’Doherty invited me to collaborate with him for a talk programmed by the Irish Architecture Foundation at the International Literary Festival Dublin in 2019. We gave the same talk at the Body & Soul Festival in Ballinlough later that summer.

Owen’s book, Bright Sparks, is a non-fiction book for young people, about discoveries, inventions and designs by women. We created a talk about the book and also about female pioneers in electronic music. I played excerpts of the following music:

Delia Derbyshire - Blue Veils and Golden Sands

Laurie Spiegel - Kepler’s Harmony of the Worlds

Suzanne Ciani - Buchla Concerts 1975

Ellll - Febreeze (Sunrise edit)

I was a contributor to the documentary and also chaired a panel discussion at the launch in Liberty Hall, with DJs Liam Dollard, Francois Pitton, Aoife Nic Canna and Sunil Sharpe, and writer Kevin Barry.

Both the film and panel discussion are available to view HERE.
